Many people ask me why I chose this career. I can be a writer, a business woman or even an office girl. But I chose teaching instead. Why? That’s the question that I have been searching for the answer.
I remember myself way back in highschool, wondering why our teachers chose to teach in our school, a public school, with tons of paper works and naughty students. I can’t understand them, they could have chosen a different career that pays well when they work hard. I always see them working hard but receiving less.
When I enter college, I promised myself that I will never be a teacher, even my parents are. But I think, destiny really plays with our plans. I end up teaching, not in a public school but online, teaching foreign students like Koreans and Japanese. I love English, even before but I never thought that my passion for this language will lead me to teaching.
After years of teaching, I understand why teachers love their jobs. It’s not the salary that anchor them to their profession but the priceless knowledge that we impart to each students. I encountered teaching beginner students, when I say beginner it’s the first time that they will be talking to an English teacher, and it’s an understatement to say it’s hard because it’s more than that. Try to imagine talking to a baby who doesn’t know how to speak yet and all you can do is tie each word with an action and check their facial expressions if they understood you or not.
Most of the time of course, you will see their eyebrows meet but you still need to smile no matter what to make them feel comfortable. Sometimes, I even told myself that I’m a teacher slash actress. You need to be both to succeed in teaching online, especially to foreign students.
Oh, well, the most rewarding feeling? Hearing them say even a simple complete sentence like, “Thank you teacher", “I understand", I’m fine", etc.
Simple knowledge that will helps them in the future. It’s like touching their lives without actually touching them. Amazing right? It’s like having the magic of knowledge in your hands.
Until now, I’m in this profession, I’ve met different students and I heard a lot of compliments and of course, complaints. But I’m never dicouraged. I used those complaints to be better.
If I can turn back time, I will never ever change my path. Because wherever I am right now, I have a purpose and I LOVE IT!
